East Midlands Nannies and Au Pairs identify 3 key areas on which to serve you:
To qualify as an Au Pair, you must be over 17 years of age. You must be prepared to look after children and you must have basic English speaking skills. (It is very hard if you do not speak English at all to become a successful Au Pair.) It is very helpful if you have experience of housework and cooking. If you can drive, this can also be a great advantage.
It is very important that your English is as good as you say it is. It is also important that you make an effort while you are in the UK to improve your English as quickly as you can.
As an Au Pair, you are required to have some knowledge of or enthusiasm for looking after children. You will not be expected to take sole care of them but you will be asked to play with them, supervise them, take them on walks and entertain them. You may be asked to give them their meals and perhaps even cook for them. If you have stated on your form that you have experience with babies, you may be asked by your family to help them with their baby. You will not be left alone with the baby but you may be required to keep an eye on the baby, change a nappy, take for a walk or give feeds.
Most families require their Au Pairs to help out with household chores. You may be asked to tidy the table after meals and to wash the dishes. Other household tasks include washing, ironing, dusting, vacuuming and making beds. You will also be responsible for keeping the children's rooms tidy.
An Au Pair is entitled to £70 per week for 25 hours per week plus two nights of babysitting, we also have families looking for an au pair plus who can earn £95 by working 35 hours per week. All meals and accommodation will be provided by your host family. In addition, your family will help you to enrol on a language course at a nearby college.
If you can drive, you may be offered the use of a car. You may also be given a few driving lessons to make sure that you are confident about driving on the left hand side. The car will probably be available for your own personal use but you will be expected to pay for fuel.
